When the months get colder, suddenly we all NEED cozy books to read.
As soon as the weather gets colder, my reading habits completely change. Suddenly I’m reaching for books filled with old forests, crackling fireplaces, magical villages, gothic manors, and stories that make me want to stay under a blanket all weekend.
There’s something about autumn and winter that makes cozy books to read feel even more magical. Whether it’s the atmosphere, the slower pace, or simply having an excuse to light a candle and make a hot chocolate, these are the books I find myself returning to year after year.
If you’re anything like me, finding books that truly capture that cosy feeling can be surprisingly difficult. The best ones transport you somewhere warm, whimsical, and comforting, making the colder months feel like something to look forward to.

What Makes a Book Cozy?
People often ask what makes a book cozy, and honestly, I think the answer is different for everyone. For me, cozy books to read are the ones that make me want to curl up under a blanket with a cup of tea and forget about the outside world for a few hours.
A cozy book doesn’t have to be light-hearted or even particularly happy. Some of my favourite cozy books for adults are gothic classics, mysterious adventures, and magical tales set deep within ancient forests. It’s all about the atmosphere the story creates.
Some of the things I look for in cozy book recommendations include:
- Atmospheric settings like old libraries, sleepy villages, enchanted forests, or windswept manors.
- Characters who feel like old friends by the time you reach the final page.
- Beautiful writing that encourages you to slow down and savour every chapter.
- A comforting sense of escapism, whether that’s through fantasy, mystery, romance, or classic literature.
- Stories that are perfect for rainy afternoons, crisp autumn evenings, or snowy weekends, making them ideal cozy books for winter.
At the end of the day, the best cozy books to read are the ones that make you feel completely at home every time you open them. Whether you’re picking up a modern fantasy, one of the many cozy classics books, or a comforting mystery, the right book can turn an ordinary evening into something a little more magical.

Cozy Books to Read
On a Winter’s Night a Traveller – Italo Calvino
Just as you begin reading a novel, you discover the book is incomplete. As you search for the rest of the story, you become the main character, embarking on a journey through a series of different novels, each beginning but never quite finishing. It’s a playful and unique exploration of what it means to be a reader, making it one of the most unique cozy books to read if you enjoy experimental fiction.

A Forest, Darkly – A.G. Slatter
If you know me you know I LOVE this book. It is by far the best new read I read in 2026, and it is one I will keep on raving about. I read this over a span of a weekend, and I physically struggled to put it down.
It was so full of magic and whimsy without being cliché or over the top. This is exactly the kind of book I’m talking about when I say I want to read about a witch in the forest.
I have since found out that this book is a part of a greater collection of witchy reads from the same author, from the Sourdough universe. And I’m super excited to get reading more of these cozy books for winter when the weather gets colder.
This enchanting novel follows a woman drawn into an ancient forest where witches, folklore, and old magic still linger. As she uncovers hidden secrets and confronts her past, she discovers that the forest has a way of changing everyone who enters it.
Northanger Abbey – Jane Austen
This is a gothic favourite for many and for good reason. If you are a big romance reader and you’ve never read Jane Austen you are in for a treat. Romance from the 19th century tends to feel so much cosier.
Young and imaginative Catherine Morland is invited to stay at the grand Northanger Abbey, where her love of gothic novels leads her to suspect dark family secrets are hidden within its walls. Blending romance, humour, and satire, Jane Austen gently pokes fun at gothic fiction while telling a charming coming-of-age story. It remains one of my favourite cozy classics books to curl up with.

Murder on the Orient Express – Agatha Christie
When a wealthy passenger is murdered aboard the luxurious Orient Express, detective Hercule Poirot must solve the case before the train reaches its destination. With every passenger becoming a suspect, Poirot uncovers one of the most ingenious mysteries ever written. If you’re looking for cozy book recommendations, this is a mystery you can’t go wrong with.
Tinder – Sally Gardner
I first read this story when I was in school and I was completely enthralled by it. It was the first time I realised that picture books weren’t just for kids books.
This is a dark fairy tale-like story and it has my heart. Inspired by a Grimm fairy tale, this beautifully illustrated novel follows Otto Hundebiss, a young soldier who becomes lost in a haunted forest after the Napoleonic Wars. There, he meets a mysterious old woman who offers him a magical tinderbox that sets him on a dangerous path filled with greed, love, and dark enchantment.
In the House in the Dark of the Woods – Laird Hunt
When Goody leaves her home to gather berries, she wanders deeper into the woods than she intended and enters a surreal world filled with witches, strange creatures, and unsettling folklore. This haunting novel blurs the line between fairy tale and psychological horror, making it one of the best cozy books to read if you love eerie autumn evenings.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll
We all know and love the film, but the book is just as magical.
After falling down a rabbit hole, Alice finds herself in a wonderfully absurd world populated by talking animals, peculiar tea parties, and unforgettable characters like the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts. As she searches for her way home, she encounters one bizarre adventure after another. It’s one of those comforting books to read whenever you need a little escapism.
The Odyssey – Homer
I actually studied this at University and I loved this and its pair- The Iliad. The Iliad actually comes first and is my favourite, however it is not something I would embark to read on a cozy weekend.
After the Trojan War, the Greek hero Odysseus embarks on a perilous ten-year journey home to Ithaca. Along the way, he battles mythical creatures, outwits monsters, resists tempting sirens, and earns the favour, and wrath, of the gods, while his family waits and hopes for his return. If you’re after cozy books for adults that combine adventure with mythology, this timeless classic is well worth picking up.
