What is a Comfort Read?
First things first, what actually is a comfort read? Comfort reads tend to fall into one of three categories:
- A familiar story from your childhood
- A ‘trashy’, totally not academic, novel
- A gossipy, funny dialogue filled memoir or any of Caitlin Moran’s manifesto’s
Truthfully, a comfort read could be anything you decide. It could even be your favourite audiobook narrator- mine is Stephen Fry.
Because it can be so many things, it often end up deeply personal to each reader. Luckily, I have no secrets, so I will be sharing the best comfort reads and why they have made the list.

Comfort Reading Tips
Making time for comfort reading is all about creating an experience that helps you relax and recharge. Whether you’re escaping a stressful day or simply looking for a peaceful way to unwind, these tips can help you get the most from your reading time.
Build a comfort reading list. Keep a collection of your favourite heartfelt reads ready for those moments when you need a little extra comfort. Having a go-to list means you’ll always have a reassuring story waiting for you.
Choose books that make you feel good. The best comfort reading books are the ones you naturally want to return to. Don’t feel pressured to read what’s trending if familiar favourites bring you more joy.
Create a cosy reading space. A comfortable chair, soft blanket, warm lighting, and your favourite drink can make even a short reading session feel like a treat. Pair your environment with relaxing reads to create the perfect escape.
Read without guilt. Comfort reading isn’t about reading quickly or ticking books off a list. Take your time, reread favourite chapters, or revisit beloved comfort books to read whenever you need a little reassurance.
Limit distractions. Put your phone on silent and allow yourself to fully immerse in the story. Reading calming things to read without interruptions helps your mind slow down and focus on the present moment.
Match your mood. Some days you may want a funny novel, while other days call for a gentle romance or cosy mystery. The best feel good reads are often the ones that meet you where you are emotionally.
Don’t be afraid to reread favourites. Returning to a book that feels warm can be incredibly comforting because you already know and love the characters, making the experience feel familiar and safe.

Comfort Reading Habits
Creating comforting reading habits can turn an ordinary reading session into a soothing daily ritual. Whether it’s spending 20 minutes with a favourite novel before bed, reading with a warm drink, or curling up in your favourite chair, small routines can make a big difference.
Many readers keep a collection of comfort reading books nearby for moments when life feels overwhelming. Unlike books chosen purely for challenge or excitement, these familiar stories provide reassurance, nostalgia, and emotional safety. Some people revisit childhood favourites, while others return to contemporary relaxing reads that leave them feeling hopeful.
If you’re looking to build a comforting routine, try setting aside dedicated screen-free reading time, creating a cosy reading space with blankets or candles, and choosing comfort books to read that you already know you’ll enjoy. Reading doesn’t always have to push you outside your comfort zone—sometimes the greatest joy comes from returning to stories that feel like home.

Comfort Reads
Nostalgic
11. Coraline
Coraline will always be one of my number one comfort reads, it’s short, it is cosy and it is a book I can truly get lost in. The fact that it trembles between two different worlds is a plus.
I know many would consider this too spooky to be a comfort read, but as a Scorpio I find ultimate peace in the essence of Autumn, Halloween and spooky stories.
10. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
This radiates christmas warmth and nostalgia in my eyes. I grew up reading this series and there’s nothing that brings me that same sense of peace.
9. The Secret Garden
There’s something incredibly calming about watching a neglected garden slowly bloom back to life. It’s a gentle story about healing, friendship, and finding beauty where you least expect it. Every time I read it, I’m reminded that growth takes time, and that can be surprisingly comforting.
8. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
It’s emotional, thoughtful, and beautifully written without ever feeling overcomplicated. I don’t reread it often because it hits hard, but whenever I do, it leaves me with the same feeling of comfort. This is a sad read, but sometimes that’s perfectly cathartic.
7. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
This series defined my childhood. It’s fast-paced, funny, and packed with adventure, but underneath all of that is a story about friendship, belonging, and discovering your own strengths. Revisiting Camp Half-Blood always feels like returning to a place where everyone is welcome.

Trashy Novels, Trashy Romance
Sometimes you don’t want literary masterpieces, you just want a book that’s entertaining, addictive, and impossible to put down. These are the books I reach for when I want pure escapism.
6. Twilight
Twilight has become a cult classic, often symbolising autumnal Tumblr girlhood from the 2010s. Although it clashes with my feminist side in more ways than I can count, it somehow remains a comfort classic.
There’s something about the rainy forests of Forks, the awkward teenage romance, and the overwhelming sense of nostalgia that makes it such an easy reread.
5. Anna and the French Kiss
This book is the literary equivalent of wrapping yourself in a blanket with a hot chocolate. It’s sweet, funny, and full of cosy Parisian charm without taking itself too seriously. If I need a guaranteed feel-good romance, this is always high on my list.
4. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
This series is just wholesome from beginning to end. Lara Jean feels wonderfully relatable, and the story is full of family, baking, first love, and cosy moments that leave you smiling. It’s the kind of book that reminds me that simple stories can sometimes be the most comforting.

Non-Fiction
3. The Tent, The Bucket and Me
This book is so funny. I’m talking laughing loudly on a bus funny. Part of it’s charm is it’s familiarity in experience, Emma Kennedy chronicles her family’s’ disastrous summer holidays through the years in a colloquial, brutal way.
Most of us can relate to things not going quite to plan, and that’s what makes this memoir so charming and binge worthy.
2. How to Build a Girl
A reflection of a journey through girlhood, inspired by the authors real, hilarious and familiar experiences. Caitlin Moran has a way of making you ugly laugh. It’s messy, honest, and unapologetically human, which is exactly why I find myself craving it in the more serious seasons of my life.
1.Tuesdays with Morrie
This is one of those rare books that leaves you feeling lighter, despite talking about life’s biggest questions. It’s gentle, thoughtful, and full of simple reminders about what really matters. Whenever life feels overwhelming, this is the kind of book that helps put things back into perspective without ever feeling preachy.
