I don’t know about you, but I am obsessed with gothic fiction movies. But I HATE horror, or at least i’m not brave enough to watch horror.

Luckily, there is a plethora of creepy, chilling, halloween-esque, topsy turvy movies that satisfy that gothic itch, and still allow me to sleep at night. And i’m here to share all of my favourites so you too, can have a good nights rest.

These movies are PERFECT for date nights, girls nights, family movie nights and so much more, and will definitely keep everyone more than entertained.

What you will need for the perfect movie night

Atmosphere

All the best movie nights pay careful attention to atmosphere. This means fluffy blankets, candles, fairy lights, perhaps a projector, and good speakers.

Snacks

Popcorn is a classic for a reason, I tend to opt for sweet and salty microwave popcorn as it is super easy and convenient. My partner loves sweets, whereas I tend to opt for more savoury snacks. To keep us both happy we typically have a bowl of assorted candies, and maybe some cheese toasties to go with it. This may be a strange combination but movie nights always require a lot of snacking for us.

6 best PG13 gothic fiction movies for chilly nights

6. Coraline

It wouldn’t be a gothic fiction list if I didn’t mention Coraline at least once. This is the movie that actually made me fall in love with the genre. I was young when it came out, and I seem to remember finding it both terrifying and yet super compelling.

I have a somewhat early memory of watching it at a halloween party with my friends, and now I continue to watch it every year when spooky season rolls around- and sometimes in Spring and Summer when I am missing Autumn most.

Synopsis:

The story follows Coraline, a curious young girl who discovers a secret door leading to what appears to be a better version of her own life. But, as you’d probably expect from one of the best gothic fantasy movies ever made, perfection comes at a terrifying cost. Full of eerie settings, unsettling dolls, creeping shadows and a wonderfully haunting soundtrack, it’s the definition of gothic atmosphere.

5. Hotel Transylvania

This is a classic for gothic fiction lovers, and it stands the test of time as I still love it now as an adult. This is a super fun, quirky take on a vampire/ monster universe where a human stumbles upon the supernatural hotel. It is funny, innocent and entertaining, and a movie definitely worth watching.

The story follows Count Dracula, who runs a luxury hotel where monsters can escape from the human world. Everything changes when an ordinary backpacker accidentally stumbles through the doors, throwing Dracula’s carefully planned world into complete chaos.

4. Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is actually a movie I discovered as an adult and it has had my heart since. It truly is an iconic halloween movie. It centres around 3 witches who have been dead for hundred of years, but when a virgin lights a magical candle he reignites an old spell that brings them back.

The witches are hilarious, mischievous and out for human blood. The witches from a past time have to adapt to the changes of the modern world that is now so unfamiliar. This is hilarious and a 10/10 watch.

Synopsis:

The story follows three infamous witches who are accidentally resurrected after centuries when a teenager lights the legendary Black Flame Candle. Suddenly, the Sanderson sisters are loose in Salem once again, determined to become immortal while causing absolute chaos along the way.

3. The Addams Family

Let’s be real, we all want a romance like Morticia and Gomez’. I love watching this movie and pointing out every time Gomez does something super romantic. Strangely, this is a movie I like a lot more now than I did as a child. I used to find the movie unsettling, now it is one of my favourites.

Synopsis:

The movie follows the delightfully eccentric Addams family as they find themselves caught up in a scheme to steal their fortune after a man posing as the long-lost Uncle Fester arrives on their doorstep. As secrets begin to unravel, the family must decide whether blood really is thicker than water.

2. The Spiderwick Chronicles

This one is another super fun movie, and definitely more adventure geared than the other recommendations. I love when movies aimed at children are actually genuinely good movies with great acting, cinematography and concept. This is one of those movies you rewatch as an adult and are reminded of how good the movies from childhood actually were.

Synopsis:

After moving into an old, mysterious house, three siblings uncover Arthur Spiderwick’s field guide, revealing a secret world filled with fairies, goblins, ogres and magical creatures. Unfortunately, some of those creatures are far less friendly than others.

1. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

This is one of those comfort movies I can watch over and over again without getting bored. It has everything you could want for a cosy movie night: charming characters, clever humour, gorgeous stop-motion animation and just the right amount of spooky fun. Even though it’s a family film, there are so many little jokes and details that make it just as entertaining for adults, making it the perfect nostalgic watch on a chilly evening.

Synopsis:

As the annual Giant Vegetable Competition approaches, Wallace and Gromit’s pest control business is busier than ever, helping protect the town’s prized produce from hungry rabbits.
