Non fiction books for adults

I’m a big fan of learning new things, and I have a banquet of very niche knowledge that I am just waiting for a pub quiz to very specifically cater for.

Learning new things can be so, hugely fulfilling! But with so much out there it can be difficult to know where to start! My advice to you would be to take yourself to your nearest bookshop, and you will find a huge selection of popular nonfiction books for adults.

But with all the choice out there, it is often hard to know which non-fiction books are actually worth your time. As a reader myself, and someone who loves to learn and grow, I am giving you my favourite non-fiction books that have actually had a lasting impact on my life.

You are going to find a list of all my recommended nonfiction books for adults that I have read over the last few years.

This post is all about the best non-fiction books that every reader should know about.

My Journey Reading Really Good Non Fiction Books

Non-fiction books are deeply personal to each reader. There are so many to chose from. Whether you are interested in history, memoirs from you’re favourite celebrities, or if you’re like me and you tend to lean towards self improvement, there’s something for everyone.

As an avid fiction reader, it took me a while to warm up to non-fiction. At first, it required a small shift in how I read. What helped me most was discovering how much I enjoy listening to non-fiction audiobooks. Up until that point, I rarely listened to audiobook but they are such a fame changer!

NON FICTION BOOKS FOR ADULTS ABOUT LIFE

I love that with an audiobook I can listen to it on my commute to work, or when i’m doing jobs I don’t find super interesting around the house. When listening to audiobooks things as simple as the dishes, or cooking dinner on a weeknight, suddenly feels so much more interesting.

I’ve also realised something important: I really love to learn. It’s not something I’ve been able to leave behind in my school days. I feel best about myself when I am learning new things, or getting really excited about a topic.

Reading good nonfiction books for adults has made me a smarter and more confident version of myself. And it can for you too.

There are countless non-fiction books I could recommend, but these 9 have genuinely improved my life in weird and wonderful ways.

9 Recommended Non Fiction Books For Adults

1. Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

best nonfiction books for adults

I have always known that without sleep, I am a much grumpier, hungrier, and lazier version of myself. But, I didn’t know how much of a long term impact having even just a few less hours of sleep was actually having on me.

This book has changed everything for me in how I view my health. And I really think this is stuff everyone should know!

2. The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry by Jon Ronson

good nonfiction books for adults

Jon Ronson is somewhat of a trend setter in investigative journalism, and this book will shock you to the core. What I like best about this book is it is written in a the story telling tone I associate with fiction, and it really feels super accessible- especially if you are new to non fiction.

Ronson explores the world of psychopaths and the mental-health industry, investigating how society identifies and labels people as “mad.” Through interviews, case studies, and darkly funny encounters, he questions the boundaries between normality and insanity.

3. The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg

really good non fiction books

Duhigg explains the science behind how habits form and how they can be changed using the cue–routine–reward loop. He shows how individuals, companies, and societies can harness this understanding to transform their behaviours.

4. How the Pill Changes Everything: Your Brain on Birth Control by Sarah Hill

recommended nonfiction books for adults

Again, this book exposed knowledge that I feel was hidden from me as a woman, and has helped me make an informed decision about my own contraceptive. I choose not to take the pill, and this book was a key reason why.

Every woman must read in order to make educated decisions about their health.

Hill examines how hormonal birth control affects women’s brains, moods, relationships, and overall health. Drawing on scientific research, she argues that understanding these effects is essential for women to make fully informed choices about contraception.

5. The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F by Mark Manson

highly recommended non fiction books

I read this when I was feeling slightly less than chipper. And it really helped give me perspective.

Manson argues that happiness comes from caring less about what doesn’t matter and taking responsibility for what does. Using blunt humour and psychological insight, he encourages readers to embrace limitations and find meaning through struggle.

6. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear

popular nonfiction books for adults

Clear outlines a practical system for building good habits and breaking bad ones through small, consistent changes. He shows how tiny improvements compound over time to produce remarkable long-term results.

7. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

best nonfiction books today

We read this in school as part of our module on black history and identity, and it was really insightful to read Maya Angelou’s story.

Angelou’s memoir recounts her childhood experiences with trauma, racism, and resilience in the American South. Through poetic storytelling, she explores identity, voice, and the healing power of literature.

8. Tuesdays With Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson by Mitch Albom

fun nonfiction books for adults

I actually read this when I was 16, I had found a copy in the loft gifted to my mum from my godmother. I quickly read it and then bought my teacher a copy, who also read and loved it.

Albom chronicles his weekly visits with his former professor, Morrie Schwartz, who shares life lessons while dying from ALS. Their conversations highlight themes of love, purpose, forgiveness, and what truly matters in life.

9. The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge by Jeremy Narby

non fiction books for adults to read

This is a less modern plight of knowledge, but one I still found deeply fascinating- especially as it felt very much like discovering something that was lost.

Narby investigates indigenous shamanic knowledge and its surprising parallels with molecular biology. He proposes a provocative theory connecting visionary experiences with the structure and communication of DNA.
