Why I love journaling, and why you should too…
My experience
Like many of us, I had inconsistently kept a journal since primary school. And whilst my earliest entries were nothing to write home about, I’m so glad I have them. It took until I was a teenager for journaling to become a habit- but, how I journaled then was VERY different to how I journal now. There is no right or wrong way to journal, you can write about literally anything. That’s what’s so great about it. In a world where we rarely get to be selfish, a journal is just the place.
Teenage Journaling: Romanticising the Chaos
When I was a teenager my main aim was to create as many stories as I possibly could, so each diary entry was a romanticised portrayal of my most unhinged years. I wrote about every party, every first experience, I captured myself learning of the world for the first time. I managed to bottle up the stupidest, funniest, and most chaotic moments of my youth. But, as you might guess, that habit came to a crashing halt after an unfortunate moment when my parents found and read my diary. Spoiler: it wasn’t pretty.
Rule no.1- Never read your child’s journal. It’s their private thoughts, feelings, and memories- let them have that safe space.
Journalling in my early 20’s
I didn’t come back to journaling until my early twenties, a time that, for me, was incredibly confusing. All the dreams I had as a teenager began to… crash and burn. I realised pretty quickly that my hobbies couldn’t necessarily pay the rent, and suddenly I had no idea how to be an adult, or even what I wanted from life anymore.
It was (and still is, if I’m honest) a pretty existential time. But journaling helped me through it.
Journaling is simultaneously a tool for recording snippets of life, practicing self care, and learning from your past self for the benefit of your future self.
